Eventing has wrapped up, dressage is underway and showjumping will commence soon at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. There has been much debate and discussion about whether equine sports such as eventing even belong in the games anymore.
Critics feel the cost and logistics of hosting equine competitions at the Olympics outweighs their value as a spectator sport with mass commercial and advertising appeal. Proponents support the tradition behind equestrian sports, with eventing first appearing at the Olympics in 1912. Many equestrians feel that we are better suited to using the World Equestrian Games as an alternative to competing at the Olympics.
