Horses Rescued from Flash Food

There was an incredible story on EventingNation.com recently about 18 horses that were evacuated after a flash flood destroyed a local stable in Virginia. Skyeler Icke Voss is an event rider and trainer who was competing at the American Eventing Championships in Georgia, September 8th – 11th when she received a call that floodwaters threatened her farm back home. Staff assured her precautions had been taken and all the horses were safe.

A half hour later, she received another call saying the rising waters had turned into a flash flood, and the horses were being evacuated. Miraculously, all 18 horses were rescued before the flood waters overcame the farm.

Young owner fights to save disfigured foal’s life

What a sad story. In the Daily Mail newspaper out of the UK, young Maddison Biddlecombe is trying to save the life of her disfigured foal Diego. He has an abnormality called Wry Nose Syndrome which interferes with his ability to breathe and eat. Veterinarians fear that as he gets older, he will starve because he will not be able to graze or eat properly.

While Maddison is only 6-years-old, she is trying to raise the money to give Diego an operation that could save his life. Despite other horse owners who have advised Maddison’s parents to put him down, the young girl is fighting to get him the operation so he can live a long and productive life.

Canadian vet clinic hosts educational event to raise money for charity

A veterinary clinic located north of Toronto, Canada will be hosting an educational conference in order to raise money for local equine charities.

“We realized that our annual client education day was a great opportunity to combine two of our fundamental interests: helping clients learn more about horses and horse care, and improving equine welfare through charitable work” said Dr. Pownall of McKee Pownall Equine Services, headquartered in Campbellville, Ontario.

The event promises a day packed with information, with topics such as (but not limited to!):

Unusual horse skeleton found in California park

An off-the-track hiker found the skeletal remains of a horse in Samuel P. Taylor State Park in November. What made the discovery unusual is not that is was a mere 260 feet from the highway, on a steep incline, but that it had a full set of tack on, including bridle, saddle and horse shoes.

The remains are speculated to be dating back to roughly the 1970′s, based on the skeleton’s state of decomposition.
